Minnesota Update, 06.17.2023
Okay, who brought the old Twins back? Right as we thought the Twins were on the upswing, they’ve now scored one run in their past 16 innings against the Tigers, to whom they lost on Friday, 7-1.
They’re getting killed by Javy Báez, who got the biggest hit of the game again on Friday, this time a three-run homer. They’re also getting killed by whoever Matt Vierling is; he hit two home runs and is 6-for-7 in the series.
Byron Buxton is 0-for-8 with four strikeouts since returning from the IL. Since May 2nd, Buxton is batting .161 and slugging .290, and has struck out in almost one of every three trips to the plate. Even Max Kepler has a better slugging percentage (.310) over that span, and most Twins fans would happily see Kepler sent to someplace they don’t have baseball.
The Twins are back to .500, 35-35, and are just two games up on Cleveland. Maybe more damning, they are just 12-10 against the horrible AL Central.
Forget the optimism!
The Lynx were back in action for the first time since last Sunday, when they’d beaten Los Angeles - and they got back into the swing of things by beating L.A. again, 77-72, this time on the road. Napheesa Collier led all scorers with 25 points, including a huge three-point play with a minute to go that turned a one-point lead into a four-point lead, and pushed the Sparks into end-of-game scramble mode.
Nikolina Milic added ten points off the bench for Minnesota, the first time in her career that she’s reached double figures in a Lynx win (she did it seven times last year, her rookie year, and the Lynx lost all seven).
The St. Paul Saints and Louisville Bats put up one of the weirdest line scores you’ll see on Friday night. Tied 1-1 after nine, the Saints ended up prevailing 8-3 in extra innings. 000 100 000 7 - it’s an easy game, right? With one out, eight consecutive Saints reached base in the tenth.
After I wrote yesterday that Matt Wallner hadn’t homered in two weeks, he did so on Friday, and also walked three times. Kenta Maeda threw 81 pitches and allowed just one run on two hits, though he also walked four and only finished 4.1 innings.
